An original musical comedy, “Something Rotten!” is something fresh that shines as a musical about the very first musical.
Welcome to the Renaissance! The time is the 1590s, a period where everything is new and success and glory gleams… for Shakespeare (Christian Borle). Having dominated with hit plays, Shakespeare, an egotistical narcissist rock star figure, has a firm grip on everyone’s hearts and makes it more than difficult for others to come up with a play that will outshine the Bard’s. Nick Bottom (Brian d’Arcy James), and his brother, Nigel Bottom (John Cariani), have had a rough time for quite a while and can’t catch their big break as successful playwrights. If they fail to conceive an idea for a hit play of which the Bard hasn’t thought, the brothers and their musical ensemble will lose their wealthy benefactor. Struggling to write a play that will put him and his brother ahead of the Bard, Nick seeks out the next big thing in theater.
As a struggling writer competing with Shakespeare, Nick searches for a soothsayer to foretell the future of theater. When Nostradamus (Brad Oscar) predicts the best theater has ever known, a musical comedy, Nick envisions the success he will soon have. With a show stopping and standing ovation worthy number, “A Musical,” the show incorporates everything from synchronized line dancing to vigorous jazz hands. Nick and Nigel then set out to include singing, dancing, and acting all at the same time, creating entertainment’s very first musical!
“Something Rotten!” is riddled with humor and puns that will have you falling off of your seat from laughter. The production also includes multiple references to almost all of the musicals that you’ve heard of. With choreography and melodies matching those from “Annie,” “Les Miserables,” and many more, this unexpectedly original musical is a new kind of show that has many unexpected twists. “Something Rotten!” is a must see musical that has something for everyone!
