Google Executives Depose Before ED in High-Stakes Online Betting Probe

Top Google India officials were recently summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a high-profile money laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The investigation pertains to alleged illegal online betting applications, several of which have Chinese origins, and the use of Google’s platform for advertising and payment services.

Illegal Betting Platforms Exploiting Tech Ecosystem

Authorities have claimed that several unregulated online gambling apps have exploited digital platforms to target Indian users. These apps used Google’s advertising services to reach large audiences and even used payment gateways—sometimes tied to Google Play—for fund transfers and deposits. These transactions reportedly generated thousands of crores in illicit revenue, which was then routed through complex money trails, possibly involving Hawala networks.

Focus on Ad Revenue and Payment Infrastructure

During the deposition, ED officials questioned the Google team about their advertising model, payment flows, and Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance in digital payments. Investigators are reportedly scrutinizing whether Google adequately monitored ad content and transaction legitimacy involving suspected betting companies. According to sources, the company is cooperating and has provided detailed documentation regarding their internal processes.

Ongoing Crackdown on Tech-Aided Financial Crimes

This development comes amid a broader crackdown by Indian authorities on tech-enabled financial fraud, including cases involving crypto scams and Chinese loan apps. The ED has already frozen assets of several fintech companies and conducted raids across multiple states. Google’s involvement highlights the increasing regulatory pressure on big tech firms operating in India, particularly around their role in enabling or overlooking illegal activities on their platforms.

Tech Giants Under Regulatory Microscope

While no direct allegations have yet been made against Google, its inclusion in the investigation underlines the growing scrutiny over the responsibility of tech platforms in financial compliance. ED is expected to continue questioning other digital stakeholders to further trace the flow of illegal funds, user data handling, and platform accountability.
