GST Simplification Will Empower Sellers and Buyers, Says Amazon India Chief

Amazon India’s Country Manager emphasized that simplification of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework would be a major positive step for the e-commerce ecosystem. He highlighted that the current GST system, though progressive, often creates complexities for small and medium businesses (SMBs) as well as online marketplaces. Streamlining compliance procedures, he said, would not only ease the burden on sellers but also ultimately benefit buyers through cost efficiency and smoother operations.

Impact on Small and Medium Businesses

The executive underlined that GST challenges such as input tax credit reconciliation, state-wise variations, and frequent compliance requirements disproportionately affect SMBs. Simplification, he argued, would enable these businesses to invest more time in scaling operations and less in navigating tax-related hurdles. “When sellers thrive, buyers experience faster deliveries, better pricing, and wider product choices,” he noted.

Boosting Digital Commerce in India

According to Amazon, India’s digital commerce market is entering a new growth phase. Removing unnecessary complexities in GST would give a push to cross-state trade, making it easier for sellers to expand their reach. The company believes this will accelerate the government’s vision of promoting digital retail, empowering small entrepreneurs, and creating more employment opportunities in the process.

Amazon’s Ongoing Commitment to India

The Country Manager reiterated Amazon’s long-term commitment to India, citing its investments in logistics, digital payment solutions, and seller training programs. He added that policy clarity and tax simplification would further enhance Amazon’s ability to serve both customers and sellers. The company expressed readiness to work with policymakers to drive reforms that align with India’s vision of becoming a global e-commerce hub.
