India’s Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has announced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s rapidly growing creative economy. The move is part of a broader strategy to empower digital creators, improve content accessibility, and expand the reach of public broadcasting services across the nation.

Officials say the initiative is designed to provide both infrastructure and opportunity, particularly for independent creators, rural content producers, and emerging talent looking to tap into India’s expanding digital audience.


Citizen Creator Platform to Empower Digital Talent

At the center of the announcement is a new “citizen creator platform,” envisioned as a space where individuals can produce, showcase, and monetize their content. The platform is expected to support a wide range of formats including videos, podcasts, educational content, and regional storytelling.

The government aims to make the platform inclusive by offering tools, training, and discoverability features, helping creators from smaller towns and underserved communities gain visibility. The initiative aligns with India’s push to position itself as a global hub for digital content production.


Boosting Public Broadcasting with Built-in Satellite Tuners

In a parallel move, the government introduced plans to integrate in-built satellite tuners into television sets. This feature will allow users to directly access DD Free Dish services without requiring additional set-top boxes.

DD Free Dish, operated by Prasar Bharati, already provides free-to-air television channels to millions of households. The integration is expected to simplify access, reduce costs for consumers, and significantly increase the platform’s reach, especially in rural and remote areas where cable or internet connectivity may be limited.


Expanding Access and Reducing Barriers

By eliminating the need for external hardware, the built-in tuner initiative aims to make television more accessible and user-friendly. Industry experts believe this could accelerate the adoption of digital broadcasting and help bridge the digital divide.
