India Unlocks Lower 6GHz Band for Wi-Fi: Faster Routers, Tighter Power Rules

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approved licence-free use of the lower 6GHz spectrum band for Wi-Fi operations, marking a major step toward faster and more reliable wireless internet across homes, offices, and public spaces. The move is expected to accelerate adoption of Wi-Fi 6E and upcoming Wi-Fi 7 technologies in the country.

What the Lower 6GHz Band Means

The lower portion of the 6GHz band offers wider channels and significantly less interference compared to existing Wi-Fi frequencies. By opening this spectrum for unlicensed use, the DoT aims to ease congestion on the crowded 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, improving performance for data-heavy applications such as 4K streaming, cloud gaming, AR/VR, and enterprise networking.

Licence-Free, But Not Limit-Free

While the spectrum has been delicensed, the DoT has introduced strict power emission limits to ensure that Wi-Fi devices do not interfere with existing licensed users, including satellite and backhaul services. These limits primarily apply to transmission power and operating conditions, with a strong emphasis on controlled indoor usage and interference management.
