Meta Purges 635K Accounts in Bold Move to Protect Teens Online

In a decisive move to bolster teen safety, Meta Platforms Inc. has announced the launch of new protective features across Instagram and Facebook. The tech giant simultaneously removed over 635,000 accounts in the first quarter of 2025 for violating child safety policies, particularly involving content that sexualizes children. This action marks Meta's most aggressive crackdown yet on online exploitation and inappropriate interactions targeting minors.

Advanced Protections Rolled Out for Teens on Meta Platforms

The new safety updates are designed to shield teens from unwanted interactions and harmful content. Meta now restricts direct messages from unknown users, limits visibility of teens' online activity, and expands automated systems that flag inappropriate behavior. Additionally, comment filters, nudity detection tools, and reporting options have been enhanced with AI to make platforms safer and more transparent for young users.

AI-Driven Monitoring Powers Meta’s Safety Push

Meta credited its improved AI detection systems and enhanced human moderation for the successful removal of 635,000 accounts that breached child safety norms. These tools now more efficiently detect predatory behavior, inappropriate contact attempts, and sexually exploitative content. Meta reiterated its commitment to collaborating with law enforcement and child safety organizations to ensure digital safety for minors.

Parental Supervision Tools Also Strengthened

Alongside user-facing safety upgrades, Meta has expanded its parental supervision dashboard, allowing guardians greater insight and control over their teens' activities. The tools include screen time tracking, DM oversight, and content engagement reports, enabling parents to act proactively against online threats.

Industry-Wide Call to Action

Meta's announcement comes amid increasing global scrutiny of online platforms over child exploitation risks. The company urged industry peers to adopt stronger safety protocols, and pledged transparency by releasing quarterly child safety reports detailing progress and policy enforcement actions.
