Microsoft's ambitious plan to launch its next-generation in-house AI chip, codenamed "Athena", has reportedly hit a roadblock, with mass production now delayed until early 2026. Initially expected to roll out in 2025, the chip was aimed at reducing Microsoft’s reliance on Nvidia’s powerful but costly GPUs for running large-scale generative AI models like those powering Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The Athena chip, designed to enhance AI workloads in Microsoft’s data centers, is seen as a cornerstone of its long-term AI strategy.
