X’s Engineering Chief Haofei Wang Departs Amid Major Leadership Shakeup

In a significant leadership change at X (formerly Twitter), Haofei Wang, the company’s Director of Engineering, has reportedly left the social media giant. Wang, who played a crucial role in overseeing engineering operations and bridging the gap between the technical team and owner Elon Musk, departs at a time of ongoing transformations within the platform.

His exit has raised questions about X’s future technical direction, as the company continues its push toward becoming an “everything app” while integrating AI-driven features.

Haofei Wang’s Role at X

Haofei Wang joined X in July 2023 and quickly became an influential figure within the company's engineering department. He was instrumental in:

  • Overseeing core engineering developments and ensuring technical stability.

  • Acting as a key link between X’s engineering teams and Elon Musk, effectively serving as the de facto head of engineering and product.

  • Advocating for major changes to the platform, such as making user "likes" private to encourage more engagement without fear of public scrutiny.

Wang was particularly vocal about the decision to hide likes from public view, arguing that visibility discouraged users from interacting with content freely. The move, announced in March 2024, was positioned as an effort to enhance user experience and engagement on the platform.

Despite his influence, Wang has not publicly commented on his departure, and X has yet to issue an official statement regarding the reasons behind his exit.

Leadership Changes at X

Wang’s departure comes as X undergoes a significant restructuring of its leadership team. In January 2024, the company brought in two key engineering leaders from RobinhoodMike Dalton and Uday Ruddaraju—to help lead its technical direction. Both executives also hold roles in xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, which is expected to play a growing role in X’s AI-driven content and features.

This move signals a broader shift in X’s strategy, integrating AI innovations with the social media platform as part of Musk’s vision to make it a global hub for communication, finance, and entertainment.

X’s Future Strategy and Challenges

As X continues its aggressive transformation, Wang’s exit adds to the uncertainty surrounding its leadership stability. The company is currently focused on:

  • Launching X Money, a digital payments platform aimed at turning X into a financial services hub, similar to WeChat in China.

  • Advancing AI-powered features, integrating Musk’s xAI models to create personalized content and chatbot-like interactions for users.

  • Expanding premium services, with Musk pushing for increased subscription revenue through X Premium.

At the same time, X has faced challenges, including regulatory scrutiny over content moderation, declining ad revenue, and increased competition from platforms like Meta’s Threads and Bluesky.

With Wang’s exit, the question remains: Who will take charge of the company’s engineering vision, and how will X continue to evolve under its new leadership?

As X navigates these transitions, all eyes will be on Musk and his executive team to see how they adapt and execute their ambitious plans for the platform’s future.
