The global foldable smartphone market is gearing up for a strong rebound in 2025, with shipments forecast to grow 10% year-on-year, reaching 20.6 million units, according to the latest IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. The report marks a shift in momentum after a relatively muted 2024 influenced by macroeconomic pressures, component costs, and delayed product launches.
▪ Stronger Product Lineups Driving Market Confidence
IDC notes that the surge in 2025 will be powered by broader OEM participation and more refined product strategies. Brands such as Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, Honor, Vivo, and Oppo are expected to expand their foldable portfolios with improved hinge durability, better crease reduction technologies, and thinner, lighter designs. The influx of mid-range foldables is also expected to widen consumer access.
▪ Improved Durability & Pricing to Boost Consumer Adoption
The report highlights that foldable devices are finally overcoming long-standing barriers related to durability and price sensitivity. Advances in ultra-thin glass, more reliable folding mechanisms, and longer-lasting displays have boosted consumer confidence. IDC suggests that aggressive pricing—especially from Chinese brands—will further accelerate adoption.
▪ Premium Segment Dominates but Mid-Range Foldables Are Rising
While premium foldables are projected to remain the largest revenue drivers, mid-range models could reshape the landscape. Analysts indicate that features such as large cover displays, professional-grade cameras, and integrated AI tools are becoming more standardized, reducing the gap between flagship and affordable foldables.
▪ Asia-Pacific Expected to Lead Growth Curve
Emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region—including India, China, and Southeast Asian countries—will play a substantial role in driving demand. IDC says these markets show increasing interest in foldable form factors as prices begin to align more closely with high-end slab phones.
▪ Foldables Still a Niche but Growing Steadily
Despite the growth projection, IDC emphasizes that foldables will still represent a small piece of the overall smartphone market in 2025. However, the category’s steady expansion signals long-term viability driven by innovation, competition, and evolving consumer habits.
