Todd Howard Confirms The Elder Scrolls 6 Is Still Years Away From Release

Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard has provided an update on the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls 6, confirming that the next installment in the beloved RPG series is still years away from release. Fans hoping for a surprise launch window may have to temper their expectations.

🧭 Development Still in Early-to-Mid Stages

In a recent interview, Howard acknowledged that The Elder Scrolls 6 is actively in development, but progress remains slow and deliberate. The studio continues to prioritize polishing Starfield—Bethesda’s major 2023 space RPG—before shifting full attention to the next Elder Scrolls chapter.

Howard emphasized Bethesda’s commitment to quality and world-building, saying the game aims to be “a title that people will play for a decade,” echoing the lasting legacy of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, released in 2011.

🏔️ A Sequel to Define a Generation

While Bethesda revealed The Elder Scrolls 6 with a short teaser trailer during E3 2018, the studio has remained tight-lipped ever since. Howard reiterated that the project represents “a new era” for The Elder Scrolls series, built using Bethesda’s upgraded Creation Engine 2, the same technology powering Starfield.

This engine overhaul is expected to deliver more dynamic worlds, improved AI, and enhanced realism—elements that could make The Elder Scrolls 6 one of the most ambitious RPGs in modern gaming.

🕹️ Xbox Exclusive Potential

Since Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, in 2021, there’s been growing speculation about exclusivity. Although Howard has not confirmed details, industry insiders believe The Elder Scrolls 6 will likely be an Xbox and PC exclusive, similar to Starfield.

Such a move could strengthen Microsoft’s game library while pushing more players toward Xbox Game Pass.

Fans Still Waiting for Tamriel’s Return

More than a decade after Skyrim’s monumental success, fans are eager to revisit Tamriel’s vast landscapes. However, Howard’s remarks suggest that the wait will continue for several more years. “We want to make sure it’s worth the time and expectations,” he noted, reaffirming Bethesda’s long-term vision for the franchise.
