AI Becomes India’s New Newsroom: Influencers and Algorithms Shape the Future

Growing Trust in AI-Powered News Delivery

A recent report reveals a dramatic shift in how Indians consume news, highlighting a growing trust in artificial intelligence tools and social media influencers. According to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2024, India stands out as one of the leading countries where users are turning to AI-driven platforms like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and other large language models for news updates, context, and summaries. The study shows nearly one in four Indians now use generative AI tools for news, far above the global average of 13%.

Social Media Influencers Rise as Key Information Channels

Another striking trend is the emergence of digital influencers as prominent news voices. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and even WhatsApp are becoming go-to sources for millions of Indians, especially younger users who prefer short-form, relatable content over traditional formats. These influencers often deliver bite-sized news, opinionated takes, or fact-checked summaries—creating an ecosystem where journalism meets personal branding.

Decline in Traditional News Media Trust

The report also suggests a waning trust in traditional print and broadcast journalism, especially among urban and tech-savvy populations. In India, trust in legacy media dropped to 38%, with users expressing concerns over bias, sensationalism, and political alignment. By contrast, generative AI was praised for its perceived neutrality and depth of explanation, although misinformation concerns persist.

India Leads Global Shift in AI-News Adoption

India's digital maturity, widespread smartphone access, and comfort with English have contributed to its high adoption of AI-based news tools. The country ranked second only to the United States in terms of using generative AI for news-related purposes. With platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini increasingly integrated into daily apps and search engines, their influence on public opinion is poised to grow.

Concerns Over Accuracy and Regulation Persist

While convenience and personalization drive AI and influencer-led news, the report also highlights the lack of transparency and accountability in these emerging formats. Experts warn of echo chambers, algorithmic bias, and the spread of misinformation—issues that call for urgent regulatory frameworks and media literacy initiatives in India.
