State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has officially rolled out Wi-Fi Calling (VoWiFi) services across all telecom circles in India, marking a major step toward improving indoor connectivity and voice call quality for its users. The nationwide deployment positions BSNL alongside private operators that already offer similar services.
What Wi-Fi Calling Means for BSNL Users
Wi-Fi Calling allows subscribers to make and receive voice calls and SMS using a Wi-Fi network instead of relying solely on cellular signals. This feature is particularly beneficial in areas with weak mobile coverage, such as basements, high-rise buildings, remote locations, and dense urban zones.
With the rollout, BSNL customers can stay connected even when traditional network signals are unstable or unavailable.
Seamless Calling Without Extra Charges
BSNL has clarified that Wi-Fi Calling will not incur any additional charges beyond existing voice tariffs. Calls made over Wi-Fi are billed just like regular voice calls, making the service cost-effective for users facing coverage challenges.
Importantly, subscribers do not need a separate app to access the feature, as Wi-Fi Calling is integrated directly into supported smartphones.
Device Compatibility and Requirements
To use Wi-Fi Calling on BSNL, customers must have:
-
A Wi-Fi Calling–supported smartphone
-
Latest software updates installed
-
The VoWiFi option enabled in phone settings
The service currently supports a wide range of Android and iOS devices, with more models expected to be added through future updates.
Boost to Call Quality and Network Reliability
BSNL says the Wi-Fi Calling service delivers:
-
Clearer voice quality
-
Reduced call drops
-
Better indoor connectivity
-
Improved network reliability during congestion
Calls automatically switch between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, ensuring uninterrupted communication.
Strategic Move Amid Network Modernisation
The nationwide VoWiFi rollout comes as BSNL continues to modernise its network infrastructure, including 4G expansion and preparations for future technologies. By enabling Wi-Fi Calling across all circles, BSNL aims to enhance user experience and remain competitive in India’s fast-evolving telecom market.
Industry experts view this move as especially valuable for rural users and government institutions, where BSNL maintains a strong presence.
