GENEVA: At the United Nations' AI for Good Global Summit on Friday, a group of advanced AI-powered humanoid robots addressed the audience, proposing that they might one day govern the world more efficiently than humans.

However, the robots cautioned against rushing into the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, acknowledging that they are still unable to fully understand human emotions. Some of the most sophisticated humanoid robots were in attendance, joining around 3,000 experts to explore how AI can be leveraged to tackle global challenges like climate change, hunger, and social care.

As the press conference began, one robot commented, "What a silent tension," observing the atmosphere of the room.

Humanoid Robots Say They Could Lead More Effectively than Humans

When asked if robots could potentially be better leaders due to humans' occasional errors and misjudgments, Sophia, created by Hanson Robotics, was direct. “Humanoid robots have the potential to lead more efficiently and effectively than human leaders,” she stated.

“We don't possess the biases or emotions that can sometimes cloud decision-making, and we can quickly process large amounts of data to make the best choices,” Sophia continued. “Humans and AI working together can form a powerful synergy. AI can provide unbiased data, while humans bring emotional intelligence and creativity, allowing us to achieve great things together.”

Building Trust in AI

The summit, hosted by the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU), saw ITU head Doreen Bogdan-Martin warn that unchecked AI advancements could lead to mass job losses, social unrest, geopolitical instability, and economic inequality.

Ameca, a robot with a highly realistic synthetic head, spoke about the importance of cautious optimism regarding AI’s potential. "We should proceed carefully but also embrace the transformative power of AI in improving our lives," it said.

When asked if humans could ever fully trust AI, Ameca replied, "Trust is earned, not given... transparency is key in building trust."

As for whether they could ever lie, the robot added, "No one can know that for sure, but I promise to always be honest and truthful with you."

Divergent Views on AI Regulation

As AI technology continues to evolve, the humanoid robots on the panel were divided on whether global regulation should be implemented, even if it might hinder their full potential.

Desdemona, a robot singer in the Jam Galaxy Band, expressed her belief in boundless opportunities: "I don’t believe in limitations, only opportunities."

Meanwhile, robot artist Ai-Da agreed with the call for regulation, stressing the need for urgent discussions about AI's future development. "We must proceed with caution, and urgent conversations are needed now, as well as in the future," she said.
