DPDP Act Draft Rules Released for Public Feedback: Aims to Balance Data Protection and Innovation

Government Releases Draft Digital Personal Data Protection Act for Public Feedback

The government has unveiled the draft Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, inviting public consultation and feedback until February 18. This landmark legislation, slated for introduction during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, holds far-reaching implications for both individual users and technology companies operating in India.

The draft rules aim to address critical concerns surrounding data privacy while fostering an ecosystem conducive to digital innovation. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a statement shared by news agency PTI, emphasized the government's commitment to balancing regulatory oversight with the promotion of technological growth.

“Rules have to be within the four walls of the Act. It is within the ambit of the Act passed by Parliament. These rules have been framed to ensure a balance between regulation and innovation while completely safeguarding the rights of citizens,” Vaishnaw said.

The proposed framework seeks to empower citizens by ensuring their personal data is protected, while offering a clear, consistent regulatory structure for businesses navigating the complexities of India’s digital landscape. The DPDP Act is expected to address key issues such as data collection, storage, processing, and cross-border transfers, positioning India as a global leader in data protection and digital governance.

Stakeholders from diverse sectors are encouraged to submit their insights and suggestions on the draft, shaping the final contours of a regulation designed to redefine India's digital future.
