In a significant recognition of Indian scientific excellence, Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Institute Chair Professor at IIT Kharagpur, has been awarded the prestigious 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by UNESCO. The award acknowledges his groundbreaking contributions to low-cost medical diagnostics, which have significantly impacted global healthcare, especially in developing countries.
An alumnus of Jadavpur University and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, Prof. Chakraborty has held visiting positions at Stanford University and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. His research has led to affordable diagnostic solutions for diseases like anaemia, cancer, COVID-19, and tuberculosis.
Expressing his gratitude, Prof. Chakraborty told The Hindu, “I am elated to win this award from India because it’s a recognition of humanitarian work through science and technology.”
This award adds to his numerous accolades, including the J C Bose National Fellowship, and reinforces his status as a global leader in healthcare-focused scientific innovation.
