India Takes Quantum Leap: DRDO & IIT-Delhi Achieve 1-Km Free-Space Secure Quantum Communication

India’s Quantum Communication Milestone

In a major technological breakthrough, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has successfully demonstrated free-space quantum secure communication over a distance of one kilometer. The test was conducted in an outdoor environment and is being hailed as a significant step toward securing India’s defense and strategic communication networks.


Quantum Key Distribution in Open-Air Environment

The core of this demonstration lies in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a cutting-edge method that uses principles of quantum mechanics to securely transmit encryption keys. Unlike traditional encryption, QKD ensures that any attempt to eavesdrop can be detected, thus making the communication virtually unhackable. The transmission took place over a line-of-sight free-space optical channel, a setting that mimics real-world operational environments, such as satellite or battlefield communication.


Indigenous Effort Under National Mission

This accomplishment aligns with India’s broader mission to become self-reliant in quantum technologies. The experiment was carried out under the National Mission on Quantum Technologies and Applications (NM-QTA) and supports the development of indigenous quantum communication infrastructure. DRDO’s Young Scientist Laboratory (DYSL-QT), along with IIT-Delhi’s physics and optics experts, played key roles in the success of the trial.

The implications of this breakthrough are far-reaching. Secure quantum communication can be used in military operations, secure satellite links, financial institutions, and government data protection.
