Meta has officially launched its much-anticipated “Ghost Posts” feature on Threads, allowing users to share temporary posts that disappear automatically after 24 hours. The announcement was made by Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, on October 28, 2025, through his Threads account and Meta’s newsroom update at https://about.fb.com/news.
This new feature aims to enhance spontaneous and time-limited conversations, blending the real-time appeal of Threads with the ephemeral content concept popularized by Instagram Stories and Snapchat.
🔹 What Are ‘Ghost Posts’?
‘Ghost Posts’ allow Threads users to share text updates, images, GIFs, or polls that vanish after 24 hours, leaving no trace on the user’s profile.
According to Meta, the feature is designed to “encourage authentic, in-the-moment sharing without the pressure of permanence.” Users can toggle between standard posts and ghost posts before publishing.
Ghost Posts will appear in followers’ feeds and the app’s new ‘24-hour’ tab, visually marked with a ghost icon to differentiate them from regular updates.
🔹 Global Availability and Platform Integration
The rollout began on October 28, 2025, and will be completed globally by early November across Android, iOS, and web versions of Threads.
Meta confirmed that Ghost Posts will also integrate seamlessly with Instagram, allowing users to cross-post ephemeral content between the two platforms — part of the company’s ongoing effort to deepen connectivity across its ecosystem.
This is the latest in a series of updates aimed at boosting user engagement on Threads, which has been steadily growing since its launch in July 2023.
🔹 Meta’s Vision for Ephemeral Social Sharing
In the official statement, Meta highlighted its intention to make Threads more dynamic and user-centric:
“Ghost Posts are built to make social sharing feel more real — fleeting, expressive, and pressure-free,” said Adam Mosseri.
The feature aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s strategy of turning Threads into a conversation-first platform that combines the brevity of X (formerly Twitter) with the creativity of Instagram.
Zuckerberg added on his Threads account:
“People want to share without overthinking. Ghost Posts give everyone the freedom to say something fun or random and let it fade away naturally.”
🔹 Safety, Privacy, and Moderation Controls
Meta emphasized that Ghost Posts will follow the same Community Guidelines and AI moderation systems as regular Threads content.
Even though the posts disappear after 24 hours, they can still be reported or flagged during their active period. Meta also confirmed that deleted Ghost Posts will be permanently erased from servers within 30 days, ensuring compliance with privacy laws like the EU’s Digital Services Act.
🔹 Early User Reactions and Expert Take
The feature has received positive reactions from early testers who say Ghost Posts make the platform feel “more casual and conversational.”
Tech analyst Jane Manchun Wong noted that this addition could help Threads capture younger audiences seeking low-commitment, real-time interaction — a key area where platforms like Snapchat and BeReal have thrived.
