OpenAI Expands ChatGPT's Memory Feature to Free Users in Major Update

OpenAI has officially expanded its powerful Memory feature to all ChatGPT users, including those on the free tier, marking a significant shift in the accessibility of AI personalization. This move allows a broader audience to benefit from more consistent and context-aware interactions with ChatGPT.

Previously available only to ChatGPT Plus subscribers, the Memory function enables the chatbot to remember facts about a user across conversations — such as name, preferences, writing style, or frequently discussed topics. With the latest rollout, free users of ChatGPT can now experience a more tailored and intelligent assistant that evolves with their needs over time.

Memory is being introduced gradually throughout June 2025, with notifications alerting users once it becomes available in their accounts. Users will be informed when ChatGPT remembers something and can easily manage or delete stored memories via the settings menu under Settings → Personalization → Memory. There’s also an option to disable memory entirely if preferred.

According to OpenAI, examples of what ChatGPT might remember include:

  • Preferred tone and style in writing

  • Your name or nickname

  • Frequently asked types of content or queries

  • Past preferences for formatting or topic areas

This memory-enabled personalization aims to improve long-term user experience, making ChatGPT more like a helpful assistant that gets better over time. OpenAI has emphasized transparency and user control, noting that memory updates are visible and users will be notified whenever new memories are formed.

The update is part of OpenAI's broader push to improve the usability and value of ChatGPT, especially amid growing competition in the AI space. The move may also reflect OpenAI's strategy to gather broader user feedback and usage data to further fine-tune the assistant’s behavior.

OpenAI has clarified that memory is available in GPT-4o (the latest, more responsive model) and not in the older GPT-3.5, which is still the default for free users unless they switch manually. However, the memory feature itself does not require a paid subscription.
