In a significant nod to the rise of the Indian developer community, Replit Co-founder and CEO Amjad Masad has declared India as the company’s fastest-growing market after the United States. The revelation comes as the San Francisco-based AI-powered coding platform continues its global expansion and deepens its focus on developer-first tools.
Speaking at a recent virtual event hosted by Replit for its global user base, Masad emphasized the sheer volume and energy of Indian developers contributing to the platform’s growth. “India is not only a fast-growing market—it’s a force of creativity, innovation, and learning,” he said. “After the United States, India leads in user sign-ups, active developers, and new project creation.”
India’s Developer Boom
India’s rise as a digital powerhouse is no secret. With over 5 million software developers and a growing number of students embracing programming as early as high school, the country has emerged as a global hub for tech talent. This developer boom has naturally aligned with Replit’s mission: to make programming accessible to anyone, anywhere, from any device.
“Every day we see thousands of Indian students, freelancers, and hobbyists building everything from games to full-stack applications on Replit,” Masad noted. “It’s incredibly inspiring.”
Replit’s Appeal in the Indian Context
Founded in 2016, Replit has evolved into a cloud-based integrated development environment (IDE) with a strong emphasis on AI-assisted coding. Its flagship product, Ghostwriter—an AI code completion and generation assistant—has become particularly popular among beginners and solo developers.
India’s demand for accessible, mobile-friendly, and low-resource coding environments has helped Replit stand out in a crowded market. Many Indian users rely on budget laptops or mobile devices, and Replit’s cloud-based infrastructure removes the need for high-end hardware.
In recent months, Replit has seen a spike in usage from Indian Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, thanks to increasing internet penetration and a push toward digital literacy through government and private initiatives.
Strategic Growth and Localization
To cater to this surging interest, Replit has hinted at deeper localization efforts. While the company has not yet announced a physical office in India, Masad suggested that India will play a pivotal role in future growth strategies, including hiring, community events, and academic collaborations.
“We’re looking at ways to support the Indian ecosystem—through partnerships, scholarships, and perhaps local data infrastructure down the line,” Masad said. “India is not just a user base; it’s a partner in our journey.”
Future of Coding, and Replit’s Role
Masad also spoke about the future of AI in programming. “We’re moving toward a world where anyone can build software with the help of AI,” he said. “And India, with its vast and young talent pool, is uniquely positioned to lead in this transition.”
He reiterated Replit’s long-term goal of turning billions into builders—regardless of geography or background. “Our job is to make coding as universal and seamless as writing an email. And India is showing us what that future looks like.”
