India’s technology and communication regulators have directed WhatsApp to enforce a new security requirement known as SIM binding, a move aimed at reducing account misuse, number spoofing and unauthorized device access. Under the new mandate, the popular messaging platform will need to verify that every WhatsApp account is actively tied to the SIM card associated with the registered mobile number.

New Rules Also Require Web and Desktop Logouts Every Six Hours

Alongside SIM binding, authorities have also ordered WhatsApp to automatically log out active web and desktop sessions every six hours. Officials say this step is meant to curb long-running sessions on shared or unattended computers, which are often exploited for unauthorized access or data scraping.

Government Pushes for Stronger User Verification

The directive is part of a broader national effort to tighten digital identity verification. Regulators believe SIM binding will add an extra authentication layer, preventing cases where attackers hijack accounts through cloned SIMs, VoIP numbers or compromised devices. By linking the platform more closely to telecom-issued SIM credentials, officials expect a drop in impersonation and fraud attempts.

WhatsApp Reviewing Implementation Path Amid User Concerns

WhatsApp is currently evaluating the technical changes required to comply. While the company has not publicly opposed the directive, industry experts warn that frequent session resets may frustrate users relying on WhatsApp Web for work or business communication. They also highlight potential challenges for people using eSIMs or switching SIM cards frequently.

Security Experts See Both Benefits and Drawbacks

Cybersecurity analysts believe SIM binding could strengthen account-level protection but stress that it should be implemented without compromising usability. They note that privacy considerations, multi-device workflows and cross-platform syncing must be carefully handled to avoid disruption for millions of users.

Rollout Expected Soon Pending Technical Adjustments

The new rules are expected to be enforced nationwide after WhatsApp finalizes the technical updates and testing. Once activated, users may receive more frequent session notifications and additional SIM-based verification prompts.
