India Boosts Global Research Presence with International Travel Support (ITS) Scheme
New Delhi, Feb 5, 2025 – In a significant push to strengthen India's global research footprint, the International Travel Support (ITS) Scheme continues to provide crucial financial assistance to Indian researchers for presenting their scientific work at international events. The initiative aims to support researchers in showcasing their work at conferences, seminars, and workshops abroad while also fostering young scientists through participation in short-term training programs.
Empowering Indian Researchers on the Global Stage
The ITS Scheme extends financial assistance to researchers affiliated with recognized Indian academic institutions and research laboratories. The support covers economy class airfare via the shortest route, airport tax, and visa fees. Additionally, young scientists—defined as those under 35 years of age—can receive up to Rs. 50,000 for registration fees. The financial aid is provided on a reimbursement basis, ensuring that eligible researchers do not face financial constraints when engaging in global scientific dialogue.
Eligibility Criteria and Scope
To qualify for the ITS Scheme, applicants must fulfill specific requirements:
-
The researcher must be actively engaged in R&D within a recognized Indian institution.
-
The applicant should have an invitation to present an original research paper, chair a session, or deliver a keynote address at an international scientific event.
-
Young scientists below 35 years can apply for training programs, short-term schools, and workshops (up to 21 days in duration).
-
Researchers who have availed of ITS support in the last three years are not eligible.
-
The event should be of international repute; informal training programs, internships, and observer-ships do not qualify.
-
Applicants must hold at least a Master's degree in Science or a Bachelor's degree in professional courses.
Application and Documentation
To streamline the application process, submissions must be made within a 60–90-day window before the event. Late or early applications will not be entertained. Additionally, a researcher who has applied once must wait 90 days before reapplying. The necessary documents include:
-
An endorsement letter from the applicant’s institution.
-
A letter of acceptance for the research paper presentation.
-
A copy of the abstract, including authorship details.
-
A complete biodata with a list of scientific publications and patents.
Enhancing India's Scientific Collaboration
By enabling Indian researchers to participate in global scientific events, the ITS Scheme plays a crucial role in enhancing international collaborations, knowledge exchange, and India's visibility in cutting-edge research. With continued government support, the initiative is poised to contribute significantly to India's scientific advancements on the world stage.
